IRS notice help

An IRS letter, explained and answered

Send us the notice. You get back what it says, what it means and what to do next — in English, Nepali or Hindi — and, with your authorization, we answer the IRS for you.

Don't leave it in the envelope

Most IRS notices give a response date. Answering on time keeps your options open: you can disagree, send documents, or set up a payment plan. Ignored notices turn into larger balances and, eventually, collection action.

Common notices

NoticeWhat it usually means
CP2000Income reported to the IRS (for example on a 1099) doesn't match your return. The IRS proposes a change and asks you to agree or disagree.
CP14You have a balance due.
CP501, CP503Reminders that a balance is still unpaid.
CP504Notice of intent to levy if the balance is not paid.
Letter 5071CThe IRS needs to verify your identity before processing a return.

The notice number is in the top or bottom right corner of the letter.

How we help

  • Read the notice and your IRS transcripts and tell you whether the IRS is right
  • With your signed Form 2848 (power of attorney), speak to the IRS for you — CPAs can represent taxpayers before the IRS
  • Prepare the response, the corrected figures or an amended return
  • Set up a payment plan if you owe and can't pay in full
  • Answer Texas Comptroller notices about sales or franchise tax

Watch out for scams

The IRS usually starts contact by mail. It does not demand payment by gift card, wire or crypto, or threaten arrest by phone. If in doubt, check your balance in your IRS online account or ask us.

Questions

Can you talk to the IRS for me?

Yes. Once you sign Form 2848, we can speak to the IRS about the tax years and forms it lists.

What if I can't pay what I owe?

The IRS offers payment plans. We can set one up with you so the balance stops growing into collection.
